Tattooing a painting isn't copying it — it's deciding what survives the change of scale. A canvas a metre wide has to fit on a forearm, and brushwork, which is thickness and colour and physical stuff, becomes line density and soft grey. What carries over is the value structure and the gesture; everything else is given up on purpose, and that decision is the design. It's the largest part of the archive, and it nearly always starts the same way: someone arrives with a museum photo on their phone.
